I’m curious, what is the approximate exposure time for a platinum/palladium print with this light box? I’d love to make this box if the lights are strong enough for a reasonable exposure time. Thanks!!!
I use a Calumet 4x5 inch monorail with the following lenses: 135mm f/5.6 Fujinon 90mm f/5.6 Fujinon 65mm f/8 Super-Angulon 47mm f/5.6 Super-Angulon
Great video. Could you please give some further advice how you wired up the Arri plug to the barrel plug adapter? The Arri plug has a bigger and a smaller connector. So I’m wondering which of the two needs the be wired to the tip and which to the ring of the barrel plug connector? Thank you
Great information fine classic camera thank you.
Great Video, I am doing the process and it's taken my photography prints to the next level!
That is one impressive negative and print! Great video. Best wishes, David in the UK.
Mat a warning to everyone about the sinar Vario backs, as part of the Rules of thumb; Read the manuals of the film backs, I just shot a roll of 120 Gold 200 in 6x12 but did a mistake, I Wound on straight after the counter said to switch to "EXP.", DON'T, when the exp. shows SWITCH the lever over...STOP, take your FIRST shot!!, then WIND up, to shot TWO, this one cost me the first exposure, got the other 5 thank goodness, the 6x12 has 6 exposures, all worked ok after, NO problems leaving a roll in 3 weeks straight, no film flatness issues. The manual isn't quite clear on the markings, so as above, fire as soon as the lever is switched over to EXP. and as soon as you see the RED triangle of the colour change and the word 'LOAD', ITS SAFE to wind-off, no more shots left. just be carefull if this is LOADED with film, as that EXP/LOAD lever arms/trips the counter system[to wind off a partly shot roll], so store it safe, so nothing can touch it!!
I have a rule 5,6&7, 5) Always test fire the shot, and do 'idiot checks' , to see if the shutter speed is correct, Lens is closed, movements and tripod head locked down, slide out, metered correctly (while setting up has the light changed?); 6) Practice, esp. with new gear, film loading, packing gear (what bag for what shoot)-for ease of moving around; 7) if you get something new, use 120 film to test it!, for light leaks, or a film stock, I have wasted enough film to know, use cheap SIZE to see if you like it, then by all means go full sheet, so you KNOW you use it, and it gives the look you like. 8) {bonus}Also if in DOUBT USE lens shades, or an ND filter, these formats are GLARE sensitive, so be carefull, know what light you are going into, and what your film/s can take.
great intro to lf lenses mat; but another major consideration you didn't mention is the Lens board and shutter size/type, to fit on the camera, also the filter thread on the front element; I got a Fujinon SWD 65 f5.6 and was lucky, it has a 67mm thread, so with adaptors, a Kase K-9 100mm filter system can fit!, other sizes, you need a custom filter solution, like the rod based one you showed on the Sinar P2 video, which adapt to the camera, not the lens, like the compendium shade brackets, OR use inner screw on filters, which attach directly to the rear of the front glass element, or the front of the rear element.
where did you get the black grid thing in the Bottom on your sink? The mat that lets water drain when items are sitting on it? thanks and sorry for the random question. I need one of those. b
providing you have correct lens board for your camera will any lens work?? example i know my lensboard is 4x4. im using a burke and james 4x5 camera
Thanks for the videos, Mat. I use a Toyo 810M field camera and make portraits outdoors, very quickly, usually under stress. I need a new tripod head and tripod, and have a chance to get an Arca Swiss Cube very inexpensively, or a Majestic head. All things being equal pricewise, which would you recommend? Thanks! Mark
Hello from Cincinnati. Are you able to use the same large format negative for both silver and platinum printing or are you custom creating specific for platinum! Have enjoyed your channel. Cheers.
Thank you!
I can't do math but I'm wondering if anyone has made a DIY job of the latter film plane meters? Like the large format back would allow a normal lightmeter to be put inside, you'd just need a remote way to trigger or even sacrifice a meter, put the receptor inside and the wired body outside to take a reading?
Môžete mi povedať kde nájdem EU servis na DB uzávierku???
how do you scan 4x5
I take indoor shots with my 8 x 10 pinhole using direct positive paper. Exposure time around 9 hours. Sometimes I start the exposure when I go to bed so the camera will start the exposure at first light. Worth the effort but just remember to take the lens cap off.😃😃😃
There was an earlier version called the bag back. There was an actually a bag connected to the back. You would have to manually remove the septum by pulling it into the bag and slip it under the unexposed septum. Wierd, but it worked.
is f32 good enough for landscape??
No, that darkslide is not literally cut in half. You have to cut less than half, otherwise the two images you shoot on the same piece of film will touch.
Still waiting for the diy fixer video 😢
so, like u woke up in th emorning and decided for that hair style? and talking about light meters?
I hope all well with you. Are you finished the review video of GVM product, we already had cooperated for a long time.
Thanks for the advice. I’m selling my hasselblad cfv 50c and picking up an intrepid 8x10. Stoked to start this large format adventure.
In college I worked at the Media Lab checking out equipment to students. Most students would not take the tripod because was so heavy. It showed.
my film back actually got stuck on and it's not letting me insert the dark slide to remove it. the shutter is working but its not reading the film back (shutter count) I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to remove the film back without inserting the dark slide - like a hard reset manually?!?
Why is X-Ray film double sided?
Get a haircut hippie
Good luck keeping this film from scratching. It's ridiculously delicate.
I don't know how to explain it but this just makes me happy! LF photography is a dream of mine; only just thinking of upgrading to medium right now! Beautifully shot video, I'm subscribed :)
will that work with intrepid 4x5
I hope everything is well with you. Could you please tell me when can the video be released? -----GVM Team
Been following your channel for a while now. Very informative. Do you have a link to that rough edge template you used to tear the paper in this video? Thanks
Zebra Glass Plates from Slovenia are an option. I am trying some out and so far so good!
I actually tried this in 2017 and it worked the recipe being 10 heaped tea-spoons of coffee and 5 heaped tea-spoons of washing soda, aka sodium carbonate without vitamin 'C'. The film was 400 ASA B&W and 25 years past the 'develop by' date. In case some folks are unsure, baking soda, bicarbonate, is not sufficiently alkaline. The DIY aspect is good. I have no idea how much regular developer costs these days but coffee that works is nevertheless not dirt cheap. That said, in the early days all manner of ingredients were used as developer but I would stay clear of mercury vapour!!!
Hello Mat! Its it possible to make a super 16mm conversion to that camera? I did hear that if you wanna make the conversion you have to change the mirror too
Awesome
Fantastic portrait! Amazing!
Find out years later after purchasing that it’s off by a stop compared to Minolta Spot F
Great content!!!👍👍👍
more DIY Videos! 👍😉
Dark room should be painted white, so a small amount of safe-light goes a long way.
Just to make sure I got it… you take a reading of the shadows and then remove 2 stops from there. You take the picture at that exposure. You then take a reading of the highlights and add 2 stops. You check how far these values for highlights and shadows are from each others in terms of stops. If less than 5, develop longer; if more, develop less. Is that it?
love the shot at 15:34, makes me want to ask the cops to do my mug shot in RA-4 🙂 [I am only making a funny here!!, as it is such a good close up shot]. Also Mat, because of the copious amount of light, a great 'test' for vampires!, they'd have no chance!!
My favorite lens on my 4x5 cameras has become my 135mm. That always seems to have the field of view that matches my sense of what is right. It has become on 4 x 5 what my 35mm is on 35mm cameras. This is usually very individual.
Great to see you, we missed you… and some of us were worried about you. 🎉🎉
This hurts my brain, utterly incredible to see this
I feel like that was a big mistake ignoring the 360° pinhole "because it's a paint can".
There's a whole follow-up with the Paint Can!
Sinar P1 8x10 (with 4x5 reducing back) Elinchrom x 3 flash lights. Who ever said the only good thing to come out of Switzerland was cuckoo clocks missed a trick.
